Gardening is healthy way of relieving stress and getting in touch with nature. Many schools and parents encourage kids gardening in order for them to be more grounded and aware of the natural side of things. Encouraging kids to garden is a great way of giving them responsibility and chores. Kids gardening can improve their values and principles as well as encourage them to value nature and our environment.

Easy Projects For Kids

Giving children their very own garden pot to plant on and take care of can be very exciting for them. Kids gardening projects must be monitored by adults just to be sure that they do the right things and do not encounter any safety hazards. One easy kids gardening project is to cultivate a small garden plot. You can encourage the child to choose his or her very own seeds to plant and also give the responsibility of watering the plot daily to the child.

Other easy kids gardening projects are terrariums and miniature hydroponic gardens. Terrariums are small tanks that are basically closed and the plants in the tank generate their own moisture and carbon dioxide. It is similar to an enclosed sub-environment that you can place in the child’s room. Hydroponic gardens are gardens that do not use soil to grow plants, instead the plants are suspended over water and their roots are encouraged to grow towards the water.

Hydroponics can be done by using a small glass container filled halfway with water where a potato is suspended with the use of toothpicks or a skewer. Eventually, the potato will grow roots and the roots will seek the water below. This kind of kids gardening project also teaches them a lot about science and botany.

If you have limited space in your home for a large scale kids gardening project, you can use pots to plant the seeds in. The responsibilities of taking care of the plants in the pots are virtually the same as the plants in the gardening plot.

Be ready to remind the child to water the plants daily as well as to till the soil regularly to encourage root growth. It is fun to see kids gardening and taking an active interest in nature. Encourage your child more by getting him a set of kids gardening tools if the child is relatively small or a bigger set if the child is older. Other ways to encourage kids gardening is to accompany them. Not only can you monitor your child but you can also spend the time bonding with him.

Involving the entire family in the gardening process can be an enriching experience for everyone. Children love to garden, the adventure of planting seeds and then watching them grow, can be a fun past time for the whole family. When allowing children to help with the garden, it may be a good idea to find gardening tools for children. The big tools may be too hard to handle and children could injure themselves with these tools. Gardening tools for children are made with children in mind, and come in just the right size for little hands.

Types Of Gardening Tools For Children

Just like adult gardening tools, these pint size tools come in a wide selection of choices. Many gardening tools for children also come in bright colors and with designs on them. These enticing creations not only appeal to a child’s sense of style, they are made to be useful for the children.

Gardening tools for children include the ever popular wheel barrel. What child does not love putting dirt, weeds and plants into a wheel barrel and making a trek out to the backyard. A wheel barrel is not only good for gardening, but there are always stuffed animals that will enjoy a ride through the garden.

Water cans are another choice in gardening tools for children. Again, many of these cans are made in bright colors and with designs painted on them. Children will enjoy watching seeds grow, and allowing them to water the plants is a great way to involve them in the garden process.

A useful utility belt is another one of the gardening tools for children that can be found at almost any store. Many of these aprons can be tied on, and contain small tools that connect them to the apron. The children can walk around with their tools at the ready, to pull out weeds and help mom and dad take care of the garden.

Little knee pads can also be purchased. This is not only a fun tool but a very practical tool for the garden. Knee pads can save on the wear and tear of children’s clothing when they are helping in the garden.

Selecting gardening tools for children can be a fun journey that will inspire your children to garden. Gardening tools for children can be found at almost any gardening store or even on-line. Let the children help select their own tools, after all, they are the ones that will be using these tools.

Not only do most children enjoy planting and watching something grow, they like to feel that they are contributing to a worthwhile endeavor. Gardening for kids is a great way to teach responsibility and have fun watching them learn about plants.

The First Step In Gardening For Kids

Initially it may be a good idea to check out the space where a garden will work in your yard. Have the kids help evaluate the space and determine the size of their own personal garden. Make the kids a part of the decision making process when determining where a garden would be best situated.

When gardening for kids, teach them how to research plants for the garden. Gardening for kids is a great time to instill learning lessons. Go on-line and show them how to find out about plants. Take them to the library and let them check out books on gardening. Gardening for kids can turn into a great research project that involves many different aspects of investigation including discovering the right types of plants for the garden. Many children want to plant vegetables; this could be the key in getting them to expand their food choices. All the initial steps in gardening for kids can be a good basis for learning later on in life.

When gardening for kids, it can also be fun to find products that are kid size and ready for the garden. Many stores carry child size tools for gardening, and these may be more appropriate than having them use adult tools. Bring the kids along to select their own little shovels, trowels and especially the watering can. Most kids will want to be active in watering the garden, and what better way to control how much water is used than by giving them a watering can.

Make sure that when you are gardening for kids, that you help them with preparing the soil and even planting the seeds. Read the directions and teach them how to space the seeds and plants. Make sure that they understand the importance of good soil for the plants and how much water is necessary. Allow them to weed the garden and show them what weeds look like. Teach them the proper way to handle the gardening tools, and to always pick up their tools.

Gardening for kids is a life long lesson that they will appreciate and have a great time exploring the outside world.

There is no better time to acquaint a child with the joy of gardening than when they are in preschool. Planting flowers and gardens for preschool children can be a challenge if you do not go about it the right way. On the other hand, planting flowers and gardens for preschool children can be an exciting activity that instills a lifelong love of gardening in your children or grandchildren. If you are interested in planting flowers and gardens for preschool children, follow these simple steps and a good time will be had by all.

Flowers And Gardens For Preschool Children Should Be Simple

You do not want to overwhelm a child during his or her first attempt at gardening. When planting flowers and gardens for preschool children, it is best to start with something simple. You can start with a container garden or if you are feeling a little more ambitious, you can give your preschooler a small corner of your much larger garden plot.

Choose a few crops that are easy to grow. Marigolds are bright flowers that tend to please most children. They have a pungent smell, but most kids find this amusing more than distasteful. They are relatively easy to grow from seed but it is much more satisfying for a preschool child to plant seedlings that are already blooming. Marigolds are extremely hardy and most garden pests will avoid these bright flowers.

Sunflower seeds are a lot of fun to grow as well. When you plant sunflower seeds with your preschool age child, make sure you plant enough to make up for those that will be dug up by chipmunks and squirrels. These take a little longer to germinate, but once they do they grow fairly fast, making them an exciting addition when you are planting flowers and gardens for preschool children. Once they are full grown, you can harvest the seeds and roast them you’re your child. They make a fun and healthy snack or you can put them in pretty bags and have your child give them away as presents.

Radishes are one of the easiest vegetables to grow from seeds. They germinate fast and they are ready to harvest in just a few days. It can be very satisfying for a young gardener to plant a seed and reap a harvest in less than a month. Even if your child doesn’t like the peppery flavor of radishes, they are still fun to grow and give away as gifts.

Every child’s garden should try to grow at least one or two pumpkin vines. If you are short on space, you can actually grow a pumpkin in a flower bed and then let the vine ramble onto the yard. Just move the vine when you need to mow. A pumpkin vine can provide you with Halloween Jack-O-Lanterns, seeds for roasting, and pumpkin for pies.

If you are looking for an activity that you can do with your children that will get them out of the house and being active, you might want to consider creating a place that they can go and can take care of nature, and a place that they can cherish as their own. The idea of children’s vegetable gardens has become quite popular because they are great ways to get your children out of the house.

Wonderful Tools

The greatest things about the children’s vegetable gardens are that they are ways for children to become involved in the world around them. You can help your child to decide where their garden is going to go, and you can help them pick out which plants to put there. However, once you help them plant them and show them what to do next, the care of the children’s vegetable garden becomes up to the child.

This is something that a child can do quite easily, as long as you give them instructions and provide them with support, including reminders of what they have to do for their own vegetables to grow. A child is more than able to take care of a garden, and you can work side by side, you in your garden, and the child in theirs.

Teaches Many Things

Having children’s vegetable gardens allows your children to learn many things. First of all, they’ll be able to learn responsibility because you can have them be the ones who have to water the garden and pick the weeds.

It will teach them that when they make a commitment to something they actually have to be willing to take care of it. It will also teach them that they have to be willing to prioritize their responsibilities and put things first that are most important to them. However, having children’s vegetable gardens will teach them much more, as well. They will learn about nature and how plants grow.

It is a good idea to have children learn a little about where their food actually comes from, so that they can be educated when it comes to buying food in the future. It is always nice when your children can know where their food is coming from, and when they have some knowledge about how it got to be in their tummies. Having children’s vegetable gardens can help them learn about this.

What is more wonderful than spending some time in the yard, digging, planting, pruning, and then sitting back and enjoying the fruits of your labor - be that the edible rewards that fruit and vegetable bearing plants have to offer, or the reward of seeing a lush landscape grow and thrive before your very own eyes! Quite possibly the only think more enjoyable than doing all this with your own two hands is to get your kids digging alongside you.

Here are five fun and easy ways to incorporate kids and gardening:

Even if you do not have an extensive yard, your children can still enjoy some hands on gardening. Allow them to start with some easy to grow seeds, such as sunflower or avocado seeds, which may be done in your own kitchen. A flowerpot may be used to hold one to three sunflower seeds, which need to be tended until the little seedlings sprout and are strong enough to be planted in a larger container. An avocado seed may be suspended on a triangle made from three toothpicks over a water glass, with the bottom inch of the seed sitting in water. Your children will need to make sure that they replace the evaporated water in the glass consistently. Within about four to six weeks they will be able to see some roots sprouting from the bottom and a stem from the top. When the stem measures roughly six inches, it should be cut back to three inches. Since this may involve the use of a knife, younger children need to be assisted in this endeavor by a parent! Once the stem has once again grown and the roots have thickened, the seedling may now be planted into a large flowerpot or planter with a compost rich soil. Explain to your children that the top of the seed should remain exposed. It will now be their job to water the little tree consistently.

If you do have a yard, set aside an area for your children to call their own. In this little patch they may grow anything they like. Make sure you do not relegate them to the forgotten spot in the corner with the hard soil that is sitting in the midst of the unforgiving sun and is furthest away from the life-giving watering house. Instead, please give them a prime location, full of rich, deep soil that holds moisture well, in an area that is easily watered. Nothing will discourage a child quicker is a lack of success, and a garden where nothing - not even cacti- will grow most certainly does not offer any kind of success.

Consider planting a vegetable garden together. It does not matter if you will actually eat everything you are growing. As a matter of fact, neighbors will love zucchinis, tomatoes, eggplants, and pumpkins, and your children will not only learn how to garden, but they will also learn how to share what they grow!

For older kids who simply love art, a blooming flowerbed is a great way to get digging. Whether you start the plants from seeds or buy seedlings at your local nursery, children will love to see their efforts rewarded by fragrant blooms. This is also a great way to introduce your children to the different kinds of soils there are, and what can be done to enrich the soil. Since soil treatments sometimes require the use of gardening chemicals, the latter should only be applied with strict adult supervision and copious hand washing afterwards. It might not be a bad idea to use disposable gloves when handling chemical substances.

Purchase kid-sized gardening tools. Nothing makes a job more frustrating than having the wrong tool for the work! Do not expect your children to enthusiastically dig into the dirt if the shovel is too heavy, the rake to unwieldy for little hands, or the broom too tall for a proper clean up. Instead, visit your local big box store and purchase kid sized gardening tools and gloves, which may be had rather inexpensively.

As you can see, getting your kids to start digging alongside you can be easily and quickly done. Just make it a fun endeavor, allow them the success any gardener craves, and get some tools that are sized for their little hands. Above all, adult supervision is a must whenever chemicals of any kind are involved!
