Companion Planting: One of the Best Natural Ways to Combat Pests

For centuries companion planting has been an accepted technique to combat pests and diseases in fruit and vegetables all over the world. People often do not want pests in their garden and on their plants, however, they do not wish to use toxic chemicals to leave their garden pest free.

Companion planting is a method of non-toxic, natural pest control. Essentially companion planting means growing plants that deter certain pests along side the regular plants in your garden.

Insects will leave and move on to other areas if you grow plants in your garden that emit odors or taste that the insects find unpleasant.  It can be a long cause of trial and error to determine what are the right plants to use in your garden to ward off pests. There are some differences that need to be taken into consideration when seeking the proper pest thwarting plants. The proper plants necessary to rid your garden of pests have a lot to do with your geographical location.

Studies conducted have shown that dill can effectively be used to control the cabbage moth from infesting broccoli.

One plant may prove to be a perfect companion for another because it emits a certain substance from its roots or leaves. This substance then attracts or drives away specific insects. It achieves this effect by its smell, breaking up the soil, drawing up trace elements from deep underground or offering amounts of shade or shelter.

Herbs work very well as companion plants in your garden. They serve a number of functions such as attracting valuable insects to your garden while preventing insects that you would consider pests. The scent and foliage from the herbs make them an ideal companion for your vegetable garden. Herbs also function to create a beautiful ornamental border around your garden.

Different people have different methods of companion planting and knowing what works best to keep pests at bay. For your own garden, it will take some experimentation to discover what are the ideal companion plants to keep your garden pest free.

 Some ideas for plants that work with companion planting to keep pests from your garden are:

If you plant chives, coriander, or nasturtium in your garden, it will help you eliminate any aphides you may have. You can be rid of ants in your garden by planting spearmint, tansy or pennyroyal. Onions, turnips and potatoes will safeguard your garden from the bean leaf beetle. Common oleander can be used to eliminate the codling moth. Planting turnips, onion and radish protects your garden from the Harlequin bug. Flea beetles will avoid your garden when you plant onion, mint or garlic.

You can use garlic, larkspur and red buckeye if you have a problem with Japanese beetles in your plants. The Mexican bean beetle does not enjoy being near potato, garlic, radish or onion, so planting these will cause these pests to leave. French marigold is often used in gardens where people have infestations of root-knot nematodes. While spider mites will leave the area when onion, cloves or garlic are planted.

If you find your garden over run with squash bugs, try planting marigold or radish to control these insects. Squash vine borer can be eliminated from your garden by the planting of cloves, garlic or onion. Radish works very well in your garden to free the area of stinkbugs. Planting marigold or sage will help your garden to be free of tomato hornworm. Marigold and nasturtium in your garden will protect your plants from the pesky whitefly.
