Carpenter ants are considered to be the most difficult pests to eliminate by pest control professionals. These ants are a few species of ants that can cause damage to structures. The carpenter ants are large, black, and usually travel alone. Some carpenter ant infestations may be so large that it may take a considerable amount of time to completely eradicate them from a home. Most home owners may call professionals if the infestation does not reduce due to their own efforts. Correcting condition conducive to the infestation, using ant bait, and using chemical control methods to get rid of them can control the infestation. Before taking action, the home owners must identify the ants that are invading their homes. After, identifying the carpenter ant it is important to find all pest control methods, and choose on that is the most suitable for that specific situation. The first step in carpenter ant control is to correct the conditions that are conducive to an infestation.

This first step includes clearing away decaying or infested wood surrounding a building, and removing from inside the home and from the sides of the home. If it is possible, the home owners should replace decaying wood with sound materials. A lot of humidity provides the perfect conditions for carpenter ants, so these ants may invade homes with too much humidity, so the humidity should be adjusted accordingly. The elimination of food sources will also discourage carpenter ants from entering buildings. Food sources can be eliminated by keeping food in sealed containers, and by implementing sanitary habits, such as regularly sweeping up crumbs and other food fragments.

Ant bait is considered to be less intrusive and easier than using insecticide sprays, dusts, and granules. The ant baits are designed specifically for that ant, and there are many different types and brands available for use. Carpenter ant baits are designed for a particular species. The ant species will help dictate which products will successfully eliminate the infestation, and many people use the wrong baits for the destructive carpenter ant. When the correct bait is used, the carpenter ant will carry the food back to its home and will feed the entire colony with the bait. Once the population is reduced, a baiting program can be used to ensure that the ants don’t repopulate a home.

The chemical control method of carpenter ant control has two major goals, which is the elimination of existing nests, and the prevention of further ant entrance. This method of control will be most effective when used in conjunction with the other methods of physical control. When using this method, it is necessary to locate and treat the actual nest of the carpenter ant to achieve long-term control of the pests. If a carpenter ant is sited, it is not wise to squash him; the ant should be followed to find the location of its nest, and the nest should be treated with the chosen insecticide. It is also important to locate and kill the king and queen carpenter ant to totally eradicate the home of an infestation, because if this is not performed the ants will simply form a new colony.

The ant’s nest can be treated with any carpenter ant specific insecticide, including sprays, dusts, and gels. Finding the travel routes of the ants and treating them can also reduce an infestation. This method will kill many of the worker carpenter ants while they are foraging for food for their colony. Barrier treatments can also be applied around the foundation of a home to ensure that the ants are kept outside. Carpenter ants are one of the few insects that can destroy homes, and home owners must learn how to prevent this destruction and control a carpenter ant population before they are beyond control.
