Helpful Hints to Terminate your Indoor Flea Population
Fleas can cause irritation and disease in the human environment, and cause many problems for household pets, such as dogs and cats. However, this tiny menace can be eliminated, and there are many pest control products available for the prevention and termination of and indoor flea infestation. Fleas are small parasitic insects that feed on the blood of dogs and cats world wide, and the most common sign of a flea infestation includes scratching by the animal. There may also be grains resembling salt in pepper in the places where the pet sleeps, which are flea eggs that indicate that the fleas are reproducing. Successful flea control programs include removing the flea population from the pet, from the outdoor environment, as well as, and especially from the indoor environment. Some common flea control products include, adulticides, chemicals to eliminate immature forms of fleas, insect growth regulators, and combinations of the various methods.   Â
Indoor flea control can involve removing all stages of fleas by vacuuming. Once the environment is vacuumed, the vacuum bag should be enclosed in a plastic bag and discarded immediately. Vacuuming should be done on a daily basis in areas of high traffic, and weekly for areas of the home that are not frequently used. Cleaning the indoor environment with a vacuum can remove as much as 50 percent of flea eggs. Any pet bedding that is stored and used in the home should also be washed on a weekly basis.
The car, pet carriers, the garage, and the basement should be treated, as well as other areas inside the home where pets spend a lot of time. Flea spray is also effective for flea elimination, but homeowners should only use the sprays that are labeled as “indoor flea.†The sprays contain adulticide and insect growth regulators, which attempt to get rid of adult fleas while stunting the growth of larvae. Adulticides are only effective for killing adult fleas, and they are available in many forms, including carpet powders, foggers, or sprays. The sprays can also be applied along baseboards, moldings, under furniture, and other places foggers cannot reach. Foggers are best for large open areas, but they may not be the best for use inside the home. Nylar is a common carpet powder adulticide.
Carpets should be treated with Nylar, which can be effective for getting rid of fleas as well as roaches. The product will inhibit the growth of fleas and leave a residual for three to six months. Nylar will also rid the home of adult flea populations. Another effective flea control measure is the electronic flea trap. The flea trapper will catch and kill adult fleas found on pets. Flea trappers emit heat, light and infrared from its light bulb, which attracts the fleas. The fleas are terminated as soon as they touch the screen of the trapper.
Products called Flea Stoppers are also effective control measures against flea infestations inside the home. Flea Stoppers are formulated mini granular orthoboric acid that is made specially for fleas. The product can be sprinkled freely on the carpet to kill fleas and their larvae. If none of the methods of flea control work, it may be necessary to call an exterminator. Exterminators will only be needed in cases of severe infestation, which means that the homeowner’s tiny efforts would never suffice in terminating all of the fleas in the home. Fleas are unwanted nuisances, and pet owners’ should take the proper measures to prevent them from attacking their pet, such as using flea collars, and should properly terminate the pests once they are detected in the home.
