Helpful Tips to Controlling your Scorpion Population
Scorpions are found in most parts of the United States, especially in the south. However, in recent years scorpions began to inhabit states in the northern tier of the United States. It is believed that the scorpion migration had human help, as they are likely to have been relocated with nursery stock, because it is not possible for scorpions to make such extended trips. The scorpions make their long trip to the northern states in commercially grown shrubs, flowers, and plants from the southern states. However, scorpions are known to infest gardens in the south and southwestern states. These arachnids present a hazard in the yard and in the home, but there are ways to control a scorpion population, and their nocturnal nature can make the difficult to eliminate.
They commonly reside where it is moist and irrigated lawns, and landscaping will naturally attract scorpions. Initially, scorpions are attracted to homes of insects that they feed on, but eventually they will find their way inside of the home. Therefore, it is important to address outside scorpion populations with a maintenance type program. By keeping the outdoor populations in check, the risks of scorpions coming inside will be greatly reduced. Reducing outside populations will reduce their contact with people, which will help minimize the chance of stinging.
Scorpions often nest in flower beds, mulch piles, under wood chips, and in garages that are littered with boxes; the scorpions flat body gives it the ability to crawl under almost any object. This ability makes the scorpion a common invader of human living environments, as they seek warmth inside. Controlling scorpions on the outside is easier and less expensive than treating them on the outside. However, treatment of populations must be done on a regular basis for total eradication. Two types of preventive maintenance should be done around the home to control scorpion populations. Deltamethrin granules should be applied around the home quarterly with the minimal treatment being granules dispersed around all sides of the home. These treated areas will prevent scorpions from nesting and crawling, which keeps them out of the home.
A granule spreader will insure uniform application of granules, which pose no hazard to human beings or pets when applied properly. Granule treatments will last two to three months, and should be spread in at least a ten-foot wide area around the home. The Deltamethrin Granules are slow acting and usually need a week to work properly, but there are liquid materials that can be used on the grass to stimulate immediate scorpion control. Cykick CS is a pesticide that acts immediately in controlling scorpion populations. After the outside is treated, the inside must be treated to control the scorpion population.
If a scorpion population is found inside a home, inhabits should be careful when walking around at night, because scorpions are typically nocturnal, and highly likely to sting at night. Stepping on a scorpion is the most common way of receiving a scorpion’s sting. Placing black lights in the home during the night will help identify where scorpions are located, because they reflect the light making them visible to see. Black lights may be especially useful for people that reside where the deadly sculptured scorpion resides. A bug vacuum zapper may also be useful for some home owners; the zappers work by trapping and killing the insects. Scorpion glue traps can also be used to help control scorpion populations. The glue traps are standard traps that are enhanced with roach scent to attract the scorpions, since they love to eat roaches. The scorpion glue traps should be placed beside baseboards, but it is key to place them in closets, either side of any door in the home, and in basements and attics; traps should be changed on a quarterly basis.
