Learning About Hydroponic Vegetable Gardening Indoors
For many, the joy of gardening is cut short as the winter season moves in. Often the ability to grow vegetable year round is not practical as most people don’t have access to a green house or the space for one either. Hydroponic vegetable gardening indoors is a solution for the gardening enthusiasts.
What is Hydroponic Vegetable Gardening Indoors?
Hydroponics has been around for a long time and many ancient civilizations experimented with this form of gardening. The idea is that plants don’t necessarily need soil in order to grow. The soil itself warehouses nutrients for the plants, but if these can be given to the plant in water the plants can then thrive.
Hydroponics comes from two Greek words, hydro meaning water and ponics meaning labor. These two terms refer to the process of that is used in hydroponics.
Hydroponic vegetable gardening indoors can be accomplished by either purchasing kits or making your own planting system. The most important part of hydroponic vegetable gardening indoors is making sure the plants are given the right quantities of nutrients and water.
The ph balance of the plants is the key to making sure the plants have the correct nutrient balance. The plants roots are constantly bathed in the appropriate level nutrients. Because the plants are not soil bound, they generally are able to grow much larger and healthier than their planted cousins.
In this type of gardening, the plants still need sunlight. When hydroponic vegetable gardening indoors either the plants need to be exposed to sunlight or the proper type of lighting can be provided to grow the plants.
There is another form of hydroponics that places the plants in the air and they are sprayed with a mist that contains the appropriate nutrients. This can help save space for those living in a smaller location that still enjoys gardening.
Hydroponic vegetable gardening indoors can be done by beginners by either purchasing a kit that contains everything needed or by building their own system. When building their own system, trays will need to be used to funnel the nutrient rich solution to the plants roots. The seeds themselves will need to be placed in pots with a clay mixture to keep them in place.
Kits for hydroponics may be the best place to start as they give the beginner all the tools needed to create an indoor garden. It can be more satisfactory to have a successful garden and then move on to creating their own trays for gardening once the process has been learned.
Hydroponics has opened the door for many gardeners who never were able to make an outdoor garden.
Okay, I probably shouldn’t be talking about Holly right now when Christmas is so far away but I figured now would be a great time to think about adding some color to your yard during those winter months. The bright red berries, distinct deep green leaves, small white flowers and the diversity of the plant [...]
I’m sure that everyone, whether you garden or not, is aware of many of the gardening tools available. I mean, if you have ever been in a home improvement store, you have probably strolled past the aisles filled with gardening tools.
Even still, I would like to go through them for any beginner gardener out there. [...]
It’s not quite time to start winterizing your roses but I figured that now would be the perfect time to discuss the topic since you don’t want to leave your roses until winter is almost upon us. You will find that most roses should be winterized in November. More than likely they will still be [...]
With all the talk of fall that I have had over the last week, I have almost given up hope and started packing in my outdoor furniture. Of course, it’s not really time to start resorting to such drastic measures and I will have a few weeks left to enjoy my outdoors.
Still, even with that [...]
