Meet the National Gardening Association
The National Gardening Association is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1973, and one which has been growing steadily ever since then. They are a leader in plant-based education, and they serve as a national audience with timely materials that are specifically designed to foster an appreciation for the benefits of gardening.
Their mission is to promote home, school and community gardening as a means to renew and sustain the essential connections between people, plants and the environment. They believe that plants have the power to change our lives and that they enable the simple and therapeutic pleasures of working in one’s own garden.
They believe that, although most Americans rank gardening as being one of their favorite hobbies that most actually lack the knowledge and confidence that are needed in order to be successful gardeners, and this is one statistic that they are incredibly determined and hopeful to fix.
Programs
The National Gardening Association offers programs and initiatives which highlight the opportunities for plant-based education in everything from schools, communities, and even backyards across the country, and they serve as a bridge, in that they work to connect people to gardening in five specific core fields, which are: plant-based education, health and wellness, environmental stewardship, community development and responsible home gardening.
Core Fields of Emphasis
The National Gardening Association’s core fields of emphasis are perhaps the most important things of all in terms of their organization, and their plant-based organization field of emphasis is particularly important. The National Gardening Association is a leading provider of K-12, plant-based educational materials.
Beyond formal educational materials, their plant-based resources work to address the pervasive health concerns, such as those regarding poor nutrition and inactivity. By supporting thousands of school and community gardens worldwide, the National Gardening Association is able to help children and adults to establish important links between plants, gardening, food and health.
More
What’s even more, is that the National Gardening Association creates and publishes curricular materials that support plant-based education efforts in school and community gardens worldwide. They support plant-based education primarily through its innovative Youth Garden Grants, as well as through an array of other programs.
They help teachers to be able to expand their knowledge by offering numerous online resources, as well as seminars and workshops of all sorts. It is easy to see why they are considered as being the leader in supplying gardening education and resources in the world.
Okay, I probably shouldn’t be talking about Holly right now when Christmas is so far away but I figured now would be a great time to think about adding some color to your yard during those winter months. The bright red berries, distinct deep green leaves, small white flowers and the diversity of the plant [...]
I’m sure that everyone, whether you garden or not, is aware of many of the gardening tools available. I mean, if you have ever been in a home improvement store, you have probably strolled past the aisles filled with gardening tools.
Even still, I would like to go through them for any beginner gardener out there. [...]
It’s not quite time to start winterizing your roses but I figured that now would be the perfect time to discuss the topic since you don’t want to leave your roses until winter is almost upon us. You will find that most roses should be winterized in November. More than likely they will still be [...]
With all the talk of fall that I have had over the last week, I have almost given up hope and started packing in my outdoor furniture. Of course, it’s not really time to start resorting to such drastic measures and I will have a few weeks left to enjoy my outdoors.
Still, even with that [...]
Fall is coming up very quickly and before you know it, kids will be back to school, farmers will be bringing in crops and you’ll be getting your garden ready for the winter. Among many of the tasks that you will need to do, one of these will be in planting your bulbs for the [...]
