Organic Methods to Get Rid of Spider Mites

Published under Pest Control

Spider mites are the tiny little spiders that you might see anywhere. They live mostly on vegetation, so they are going to be living in your outdoor gardens or your outdoor plants. They can also infest your indoor plants. You’ll know you have them because you’ll be able to see them running up and down the plants, and you’ll also be able to see the damage that they cause to your plants. Spider mites can also get onto your skin and in your clothes, and they can cause bites and itching, as well as a rash. Some of the symptoms in people and pets liken them to fleas.

You can get rid of spider mites quite easily with pesticides that contain chemicals. Of course, this is the easiest way, but not the way that you should go. The problem is that when you use chemicals to rid yourself of spider mites, the chemicals also damage the plants that the spider mites have been living in. If you get the chemicals on your skin or clothing, they get damaged as well. Children and pets are suddenly going to be sick if they come near the plant that has chemicals used on it. No, chemicals are not the way to rid yourself of spider mites. You have to go organic. Going organic is something that a lot of people don’t quite understand. Basically, if you are going to use something organic to rid yourself of spider mites, this means that you are going to use a chemical-free pesticide to get rid of the pesky bugs. This is something that not many people do, but it is something that should be done more often. If you can get rid of the spider mites without using chemicals, you are going to find that you are protecting not only the plant in question, but your family, your pets, and the environment.

The first thing to remember is that you should make sure that your plants are growing in good soil and are healthy. Be sure that the soil doesn’t allow water to sit on the top of it, because this is a breeding ground for all kinds of bugs. You should try first to have a method of companion planting. If you can, try to research what types of plants should be planted near the ones with the spider mite problems. With companion planting, plants are able to help each other get rid of bugs. You should know which of your plants belongs near the other plants.

After you have tried this, its time to go to some organic pesticides. There are many to choose from, but your best bet is going to be with orange oil, because this is a great way to rid yourself of spider mites. Find something that has the orange extract in it but that contains no chemicals. This is a great organic way to make sure that the spider mites are gotten rid of without causing any potential damage to you or to your loved ones.

Another thing that you can try to use is  Neem oil. This is sort of an all around pesticide, because it will get rid of all kinds of spiders and other insects without harming the plants or anything else. This is an organic method that you might want to try to keep everyone safe. The neem oil should be diluted in water, and then sprayed on the plants that have the spider mites. Try to spray the soil and the roots as much as possible. The neem oil is not going to hurt most houseplants, but you should check to make sure before you try it. Then, you will see that it will help to get rid of the spider mites without causing any potential harm to anyone in your family or to your pets.

Hi I don’t have plants in my house. every year I get spider mites. they bite me and get into my clothing. Some of them are transperent white, and others are black with shiny shell. Every summer they come to my kitchen window screen and the kitchen door by me. they are on the walls, the courtans, lamps, shelves, clothing, practically every where. My blood presure go up to 190 over 150 when i get bitten by them. I am tired cleaning my house, and extremely angry. I also have a small tree “asterous” that makes white flowers like stars in the spring time, and this tree looks sick. I have seen mites on the tree too.
I need help to eliminate them permanently. What is the reason they come to my house? Were they come from? what attract then to my house?
    Thank You. Elly.

I have a very similar problem to Elly. The red spider mites come into my home each fall. Not on my plants. They bite us and get into bedding, etc. We live in Colorado. What suggestion can you give me to get rid of them? We have a small infant and do not want to use chemicals.
We were thinking maybe steam cleaning the carpet might work. I understand they can come from underneath the carpet padding and bred there.
There are juniper trees around the house but not close to the house. None of them look unhealthy. The house itself is made of wood and has wood on the exterior but I am not sure what kind of wood. Is it possible for them to come inside when we bring in firewood?

Thanks for any help you can give,

    Monica

Take Care– Although Neem oil is plant based (form the Neem tree), it is not necessarily safe to use. Exposure to neem oil has been linked to Parkinson’s disease (as has rotenone, another “organic” pesticide), so use with caution.

Just though this was important to mention.

Hananh.. incredible.. you make a very bold claim regarding “exposure” to neem oil and it’s link to Parkinson’s.. but with no link and with no evidence.. brilliant. I’ve searched uncle Google and found nothing stating that claim.

Vagueness and generalities.. contrary to that hit n run statement, recent research showing that neem contains extraordinarily high levels of antioxidants. Antioxidants combat free radicals that have been implicated in a wide variety of disorders including arteriosclerosis, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

I have used neem oil for numerous years for both gardening and commercial farming and have found it to be a wonderful solution on so many levels.

how do you get spider mites out of clothing and vehicles?

I would suggest spraying your houses with Tea Tree Oil, it works well on fleas so I would imagine it would work on spider mites.

You should not make claims that are seen on the web about a product or medicine you obviously know nothing about. People review information we all provide in this format. They might thingk your statement had some sand when in fact it does not.
Your suggestion is quite the contrary to the properties of this fabulous cultivar as it pertains to parkinsons.
NEEM has been promoting neem as a Non Profit since 1994. Neem has positive interactions medically regarding parkinsons.
You should not make statements that you cannot support.

I brought in 2 spotted spider mites on some clones and I tried everything under the sun to rid these horrific creatures

SNS-217, NEEM, DR DOOM FOGGERS, AVID and many others, these bugs just don’t want to die and stay gone.

SMK worked the best for me by far, plus its natural which is def a bonus

    spidermitekiller.net is the site

    Good Luck!

I don’t mean to offend but I have been gardening for a long time. I have a house full of plants, a large vegetable garden and several flower gardens outdoors. Whatever is coming into your house and getting into your clothing, bedding and onto your skin are NOT spider mites. It might be some other kind of mite, or you may have chiggers, bed bugs, scabies or something of that nature. Spider mites can be red, whitish, yellowish or brownish and they definitely do not have a chitinous black shell. Spider Mites only live on plants! They definitely dont breed in your carpet padding. They survive by sucking the sap out of the plant, which is why you will get mottling on your leaves. They do not bite you because quite frankly they have no need to, they do not survive off of blood.

In all of the years that I have been gardening and have found spider mites on my plants I have never once been bothered by them personally besides the fact that they harm my plants. You can hand wash them off your plants with soap and water or put a pesiticidal soap on them. No reason to get all crazy with chemicals, they are easy to deal with. And even when you wash them off by hand, they still wont hurt ya. Hope that helps. I would investigate more thoroughly what exactly is infesting your house.

    ~ Sara
