Pest Control Possibilities for your Mole Problem
Moles can create a large amount of damage to your lawn and grass as they tunnel while seeking out food. Mole holes not only look horrible on lawns; they are also potentially disruptive to the root systems of garden plants.
There are a variety of solutions you can create from household materials to eliminate moles before you result to trying expensive pest control options.
One item some people use to get rid of moles on their lawns is Bounce fabric softener. The aroma of oleander in fragrance softener naturally repels moles. Place a couple of new fabric softener sheets into the opening of a mole tunnel and then fill the tunnel with dirt.
Moles do not like coffee grounds. Sprinkle coffee grounds around your yard, not only will this help to ward off moles, but the grounds are also a fertilizer for your lawn.
If you have a cat, pouring some of its used litter into the opening of the mole tunnel will drive him away. Cats and moles are enemies by nature and the scent of your cat will frighten the mole.
Mole’s live on a diet that consists of insect grubs, adult insects and earthworms. If you eliminate the mole’s food source first, and then take steps to repel the mole, you stand a good chance of having the creature leave your property.
Typically, the best way to remove moles from your yard is by using mole traps, poisons or mole repellents. There are traps such as the scissors mole trap, choker mole trap and harpoon mole trap that are made purposely for killing moles. There are traps that you can use that will leave the mole alive when caught. The only drawback of these traps is that you are left with a live mole to relocate.
If you trap moles early in the spring, you can be rid of females that may be pregnant. This thwarts what could become a large mole problem in later times. Placing the mole traps properly is a critical first step. Your trap should be set near feeding tunnels that are active.
A large number of people opt to purchase commercial mole repellents to rid their property of the creatures. The make up of commercial mole repellents is based on castor oil. If you decide to use a mole repellent or poison, you must ensure that you water the area where the mixture is applied of a regular basis. This allows the repellent or poison to thoroughly penetrate the ground.
The area should be saturated before as well as after you have applied the repellent or poison. If your mole problem persists, it may be necessary to reapply the product.
If you have pets or children, it may be wise to use some of the alternative methods to eliminating moles rather than resulting to the poisons or killing traps.
Some people have had great success in eliminating moles from their yards by controlling the moles with plants. Plants that create a barrier that emits an aroma unappealing to moles can discourage the creatures from remaining on your property.
Although using plants as a method to be rid of moles is probably less effective than using traps, pesticides or repellents, it is certainly safer. Also, many of the plants you can use are very attractive and can be a wonderful addition to your grounds.
A number of bulb plants are thought to be useful for repelling moles. One of these is the daffodil. Two other’s that bloom in the spring are the Siberian squill and the crown imperidal.
Okay, I probably shouldn’t be talking about Holly right now when Christmas is so far away but I figured now would be a great time to think about adding some color to your yard during those winter months. The bright red berries, distinct deep green leaves, small white flowers and the diversity of the plant [...]
I’m sure that everyone, whether you garden or not, is aware of many of the gardening tools available. I mean, if you have ever been in a home improvement store, you have probably strolled past the aisles filled with gardening tools.
Even still, I would like to go through them for any beginner gardener out there. [...]
It’s not quite time to start winterizing your roses but I figured that now would be the perfect time to discuss the topic since you don’t want to leave your roses until winter is almost upon us. You will find that most roses should be winterized in November. More than likely they will still be [...]
With all the talk of fall that I have had over the last week, I have almost given up hope and started packing in my outdoor furniture. Of course, it’s not really time to start resorting to such drastic measures and I will have a few weeks left to enjoy my outdoors.
Still, even with that [...]
Fall is coming up very quickly and before you know it, kids will be back to school, farmers will be bringing in crops and you’ll be getting your garden ready for the winter. Among many of the tasks that you will need to do, one of these will be in planting your bulbs for the [...]
