Three Beetles That You Might Want to Keep Around the House
People often think of beetles as being annoying insects that they would like to be rid of. Even if you do not mind beetles in general, chances are good that you would not be happy to see these creatures around your house. However, there are three beetles that can actually be a benefit to keep near your home.
One of the most popular beetles that you will find around your home, especially in the spring or summer is the Soldier Beetle. These beetles are very colorful and are drawn to lights and therefore often appear on your porch. This happens because these beetles are predators and dine on other bugs. They will feed on the gnats and moths that have also been drawn to your porch by light. These beetles will also snack on ants and other small insects. So although you may not be a fan of beetles, they do a large part to keep additional insects at bay.
Soldier beetles are also known as leatherbacks because of the leathery look of the wings. Typically, they are yellow with black spots, or gray with an orange head and thorax. These beetles usually measure about an inch long.
Not only are these beetles helpful in eliminating other insects, they are also completely harmless to people. However, do not attempt to stick one in your mouth. Doing so can cause blisters to form on your tongue due to the juice inside of the creature. These juices protect the soldier beetle from being eaten by enemies.
Ground Beetles are one of the largest families of beetles. Most of these beetles feed on other insects. A number of these beetles are either black or a shiny green color and help gardeners by feeding on snails.
One of the most popular ground beetle is the Bombardier Beetle. This gray and red beetle deters other creatures that may want to eat it by shooting out streams of acid that burn. A frog, bird or lizard that captures one of these beetles in its mouth will instantly try to be rid of it.
You may find it bothersome to have a ground beetle in your home. They will seek shelter in your house during the winter, often in large numbers. However, if you want to have a healthy garden, simply pick the beetles up and move them outside. Bear in mind that they will probably eventually find their way back indoors.
Probably the most well known beetle is the ladybug. Ladybug however is not the proper name for these beetles. Technically the ladybug’s name is Ladybird Beetle.
There are a wide variety of ladybugs with vastly different appearances. Chances are good that you have come across ladybugs numerous times and have not even known what kind of bug you were looking at.
Ladybugs are very beneficial to have around the home. They feed on a diet that consists of pests that can cause damage to gardens and plants. The adults and larvae both are predators. However, they are of no harm to people at all. Ladybugs will appear in large numbers on trees that are full of aphids or scale insects. They can also be found on plants that are infested with parasites that suck sap.
If you want to keep ladybugs in your garden to help with plant protection, you can encourage them to stay by giving them ladybug houses. These houses will give them a safe place to spend the winter and to lay their eggs.
You can also encourage ladybugs to take up residence in your garden by planting vector flowers like angelica or dill.
